  1. Salazar

From the recording Salazar

From the 2004 Ray Vega Palmetto release "Squeeze, Squeeze".
“Salazar” is an original by my dear friend Marty Sheller. Marty spent many years as the trumpeter, arranger and later, producer on most of Mongo Santamaria’s recordings. I first played this tune during my first tour with Mongo in October of 1987. It was fun to play the tune then as it is now. During the 1970's, I was fortunate to listen to several radio D.J.s that had an huge impact on me. Max Salazar is one of these men. His Saturday afternoon show was a source of great music and tons of info. This tune is my way of saying thanks to Max and all of his radio colleagues of that day------ Felipe Luciano, Dick “Ricardo” Sugar, Joe Gains, Polito Vega, Carlos DeJesus, Carlos DeLeon, Les Davis, Ed Beach and Frankie Crocker. Of course the biggest thanks go to the one and only Ramon “Mongo” Santamaria, who opened the doors to the world of this great music to me. I am forever indebted to him.
